Madeira photography workshop

Volcanic Island Paradise – Improve your photography skills in Madeira’s stunning landscapes!

The Madeira Islands are a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, consisting of two main islands and several smaller islets and rock formations. This breathtaking destination is not only a paradise for nature lovers but also an unmissable opportunity for photography enthusiasts. This photography workshop is more than just a journey through stunning landscapes—it is an intensive, hands-on learning experience.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced photographer, our goal is to help you enhance your skills, master new techniques, and capture extraordinary images while exploring the most iconic locations of the island. The island boasts rugged landscapes, shimmering waterfalls, dramatic coastlines, and towering mountains.

Madeira is not a destination for beach lovers but rather a paradise for nature enthusiasts and, most importantly, landscape photographers. It is one of the most exciting destinations for landscape photography, offering everything from the world’s largest laurel forest to dramatic cliffs and mystical misty woodlands, creating the perfect setting for capturing truly unique images.

During the workshop, we don’t just visit the most beautiful locations—we also dive deeper into the technical and artisticside of photography. With a mix of individual and group sessions, hands-on exercises, and personalized feedback, we’ll help you grow your skills and take your photography to the next level.

Our passengers told about us

The main focus of this tour is photography, and we shape the schedule so that everyone can head home with as many beautiful, high-quality shots as possible.

Workshop description

Our accommodation will be in a four-star hotel in the picturesque town of Ponta do Sol, where comfortable twin rooms with stunning ocean views await us. Each day begins with a hearty breakfast and ends with a delicious dinner enjoyed at the hotel. As its name suggests, Ponta do Sol is one of the sunniest spots on the island, where the sun almost always shines.

The steep coastline, colorful houses, and rolling ocean waves create a unique photography setting. Madeira’s dramatic coastal cliffs rise sharply from the ocean, providing the perfect backdrop for sunrise and sunset photography. Meanwhile, the island’s lush interior, mystical forests, and misty mornings offer endless opportunities for creative photography.

During the day, we will practice various photography techniques, such as using filters and mastering long-exposure photography, allowing every participant to develop their skills and capture truly unique images. The itinerary serves as a guide, but we will adapt to the current weather and lighting conditions to ensure the best possible photography experience, making the most of the island’s breathtaking visual opportunities.

Day 1 – Arrival & Introduction

Travel to Madeira, meet the workshop participants and instructors. Explore the surroundings with introductory photography sessions. In the evening, enjoy a group dinner and discuss the plans for the upcoming days.

Day 2 – Fundamental Photography Techniques & Landscape Shooting

After breakfast, we set off in our comfortable rental cars (not minibuses) toward our first destination. Along the way, we stop to stock up on refreshments and snacks before letting our cameras breathe in the island’s fresh air. Throughout the journey, we make multiple photography stops to capture the stunning scenery. We visit all the planned photo spots, ensuring plenty of time to relax and enjoy the breathtaking high-altitude viewpoints. On-site workshop topics: Exposure, composition, and the use of filters. In the evening, we return to our accommodation, where we enjoy a delicious dinner while reminiscing about the day’s experiences. If the group is interested, we can also hold a photo review session or offer one-on-one consultations in the quiet evening hours. Over the next few days, we will continue our exploration of Madeira in a star-tour format, covering both the coastline and the island’s stunning interior landscapes.

Day 3 – Sunrise & Long-Exposure Photography

At sunrise, we will already be out in the field, capturing the magical morning light. After returning to our accommodation, we will discuss the day’s planned itinerary over breakfast. We will spend the rest of the day exploring Ribeira Da Janela, Ponta do Poiso, and the surrounding coastline, immersing ourselves in Madeira’s dramatic seascapes. During the day, we will focus on long-exposure techniques, practicing at waterfalls and coastal locations to master the art of capturing smooth water motion and ethereal landscapes. After dinner, we will turn our lenses toward the night sky, seizing the opportunity to capture stunning astrophotography.

Day 4-5 – Misty Forests & Atmospheric Phenomena

With our now familiar early wake-up, we will once again get ahead of sunrise, adding more stunning morning shots to our gallery. Our destination for the day is the Vereda do Fanal region, where an enchanting, fairytale-like landscape awaits us on an exciting hiking trail. Today’s workshop focus: Dramatic lighting and atmospheric landscape photography. Time will fly in this magical forest, and we will find it hard to put our cameras down as we capture the mystical fog and moody light filtering through ancient trees. By dinnertime, pleasantly tired but fulfilled, we will look forward to enjoying a well-deserved, delicious meal after a day full of unforgettable photography.

Day 6 – Final Workshop & Departure

We start the day with a delicious breakfast at our hotel, preparing for the journey home. Before departure, we take a leisurely walk along the seaside, soaking in the last moments of Madeira’s charm. There’s still time for some last-minute souvenir shopping for family and friends, and even a quick street photography session to capture the essence of the town one last time.

This photo workshop is more than just a trip—it’s a space to learn, grow, and get personal guidance from pro photographers. Our goal is that you return home not only with unforgettable memories, but also with new knowledge and stunning images. To capture the best possible photos, sometimes a bit of sacrifice is needed. Weather changes or other unexpected factors may occasionally affect the planned schedule. But your safety always comes first. If something gets postponed or rescheduled, it’s only to ensure you get the best possible experience.

We reserve the right to make program changes if needed.

The main focus of this trip is photography. If something unexpected comes up and a scheduled activity can’t happen at the planned time, our guide will do their best to rearrange or adjust it. We want you to have an amazing time—but we also make the final calls, and it’s important that all participants respect these decisions.

To join the trip, good physical health is required. Serious cardiovascular issues or neurological/mental health disorders may be exclusion criteria. If you’re unsure about your condition, it’s essential to check with your doctor beforehand.

Would you like to take professional photos too?

Our guides will help you find the perfect angle, the best composition, and make the most out of the available light.

We work with every participant individually and stay flexible to adapt to the conditions around us.

If the weather or lighting isn’t quite right, we’ll come back to the same spot—because we want you to capture your subject in the best possible conditions.

One thing’s for sure: thanks to your camera’s memory (and your own), the memories of this trip will stay with you forever.

Accommodation

Our accommodation will be in a 4-star hotel in Ponta do Sol. Double rooms with sea view.  Rooms with bathroom, LCD TV, free Wifi. Breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant.

Tour guide

I hiked, climbed mountains, and then I wanted to bring home what I saw in the mountains, so photography came into my life as a hobby, and after ten years as a profession. I’ve shared my experiences and what I’ve seen with the public in several exhibitions and travelogues. Since I decided to get the FIAP (Fédération Internationale de I’Art Photographique), I have been awarded special prizes, distinctions and acceptances in international competitions. I want to show our travellers the exciting and varied world of landscape photography.

Over time, my interest shifted towards landscape photography, and soon, I also delved into the fascinating world of drone photography. My work has been successfully recognized in prestigious competitions such as National Geographic, Nature Photographer of the Year, Magical Hungary, PCCS International Salon, Sony, vadon.ro, IBP Dreamscapes International Salon, MAFOSZ, FIAP, Pannonia Reflections, BPOTY, and WildLifePhoto. My photographs are featured in permanent exhibitions, and I have also published several self-published books showcasing my work.

Tour guide

Photography is not just a hobby for me – it is a passion inspired by my love of nature. I am fascinated by the beauty of the landscape and the uniqueness of the built environment. Photographic tours allow us to get closer to the wonders of nature, to discover the beauty that surrounds us and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world. Besides landscape photography, interior and street photography have a special place in my life. In 2023, I tried to deepen my knowledge in this field by taking a course in Street Photography at MOME. My pictures try to capture the special atmosphere of each location, the magic of the moment and the diversity of the world.
