Norway photography workshop: Lofoten

Immerse yourself in the world of photography amidst Norway’s iconic fjords!

The archipelago is part of the UNESCO World Heritage, and according to National Geographic, it is the third most attractive tourist destination in the world. Have you ever heard of Lofoten? The unique-sounding name refers to a special Norwegian archipelago located north of the Arctic Circle, between the 67th and 68th parallels. Based on this, we might expect Lofoten to be a place of constant harsh cold, but thanks to the Gulf Stream, that is not the case at all – the region is characterized by a mild winter. One of the most significant temperature anomalies on Earth can be found here. While surrounding areas may reach minus 20°C, the Lofoten Islands typically stay around 0°C.

The archipelago consists of about 60 islands, connected by bridges, tunnels, and ferry routes. The local population of around 20,000 people primarily lives off cod fishing. Lofoten is truly a paradise for photographers, offering a diverselandscape with countless photographic opportunities. The fjords and inlets provide stunning views, and the beauty of the local nature will captivate anyone who visits.

In February, during our tour, we will have a high chance of witnessing one of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomena – the Northern Lights. This magical experience, combined with the dramatic Arctic landscape, makes Lofoten a dream destination for landscape photographers.

During the workshop, we don’t just visit the most beautiful locations—we also dive deeper into the technical and artisticside of photography. With a mix of individual and group sessions, hands-on exercises, and personalized feedback, we’ll help you grow your skills and take your photography to the next level.

Our passengers told about us

The main focus of this tour is photography, and we shape the schedule so that everyone can head home with as many beautiful, high-quality shots as possible.

Workshop description

We will spend 7 nights in one of Norway’s most stunning regions, the Lofoten Islands, in February, when the winter landscape reveals its magical side. The snow-covered mountain peaks, icy fjords, and long golden hours offer uniquelighting and compositional opportunities. The Arctic winter creates a special atmosphere, and if we’re lucky, we may even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights in the night sky.

During the photography workshop, we will fully take advantage of the special winter light, as the low sun during this time provides soft, golden lighting throughout the day, allowing us to capture the breathtaking beauty of the landscape.

Throughout the day, we will explore the islands’ iconic locations – steep mountains surrounding fjords, traditional fishing villages, and snow-covered coastlines. We will focus on the conscious use of composition, light, and color, seeking harmony between the landscape and the built environment.

The itinerary is a guideline, and we will adapt to the current weather and lighting conditions to provide the best possiblephotography experience, making sure to capture the visual potential of the location to its fullest.

Day 1 – Arrival & Introduction

Arrival in Norway, meet at Harstad/Narvik Airport, followed by a transfer to the nearby hotel. In the evening, we will enjoy a group dinner, where we’ll get to know each other and discuss the workshop itinerary. We will go over our photography goals, individual growth opportunities, and the adventure that lies ahead.

Day 2 – Travel to Lofoten & First Photography Stops

After breakfast, we set off in comfortable rental cars toward the Lofoten Islands. Along the way, we will make photography stops at the most stunning fjords and coastal landscapes. In the afternoon, we will arrive at our main base, from where we will explore the iconic locations of the islands in a star-tour-like manner. In the evening, we will enjoy dinner at a nearby restaurant, and if the weather permits, we will attempt to capture our first glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Day 3 – Sunrise & Coastal Landscapes

We will be out in the field before sunrise, capturing the beauty of the Norwegian landscape in the first light of the day. Afterward, we will enjoy breakfast at a nearby restaurant. The day will be spent at the sandy beaches of Fredvang and Skagsanden, where we will practice long-exposure techniques, explore composition solutions, and work with filters. In the evening, if the sky is clear, we will prepare for another Northern Lights photography session.

Day 4 – Dynamic Landscapes & Fishing Villages

Before sunrise, we will occupy one of the best viewpoints to capture the iconic mountain ranges of Lofoten in the most beautiful light. After breakfast, we will continue our photography along the Storsandnes and Myrland coastlines, paying special attention to capturing moving water and making the most of the dramatic effects provided by the weather. In the afternoon, we will focus on fine-tuning camera settings and composition exercises to further improve our skills. In the evening, we will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, followed by another session of Northern Lights hunting.

Day 5 – Where Mountains Meet the Sea

Once again, we’ll be out in the field before sunrise to take advantage of the soft, misty morning light. Our destination for the day is the area around Haukland and Uttakleiv, where we will capture the stunning contrast between the mountains and the ocean. The coastal rocks and reflections of the sea offer exciting photographic opportunities. The focus of our technical lesson will be on the creative use of perspective and depth of field. In the evening, we will enjoy a warm dinner at a local restaurant, followed by another opportunity for Northern Lights photography.

Day 6 – Authentic Villages & Street Photography

We begin the morning at another spectacular viewpoint, then, after breakfast, we explore the traditional fishing villages of Sund and Nusfjord. The red wooden houses, fishing boats, and mountains glowing in the Northern Lights create a stunning contrast. During the day, we will engage in street photography and architectural photography exercises, focusing on the intentional use of textures and lines in our compositions. In the evening, we will conclude the day at a sandy beach, where the waving water and the Northern Lights provide unique compositional opportunities for photography.

Day 7 – Farewell to Lofoten & Journey Back

After breakfast, we begin our journey back toward Harstad/Narvik. Along the way, we will make several stops by the fjords and between the mountains, capturing a few final shots of the stunning landscapes. In the evening, we will enjoy a group dinner at a hotel near the airport, where we will reflect on the past days, discussing the lessons learned, successes, and favorite moments from the workshop.

Day 8 – Say goodbye

After breakfast, we bid farewell to Norway’s breathtaking landscapes and begin our journey home, filled with inspiration, new knowledge, and a lifetime of unforgettable photographic experiences.

This photo workshop is more than just a trip—it’s a space to learn, grow, and get personal guidance from pro photographers. Our goal is that you return home not only with unforgettable memories, but also with new knowledge and stunning images. To capture the best possible photos, sometimes a bit of sacrifice is needed. Weather changes or other unexpected factors may occasionally affect the planned schedule. But your safety always comes first. If something gets postponed or rescheduled, it’s only to ensure you get the best possible experience.

We reserve the right to make program changes if needed.

The main focus of this trip is photography. If something unexpected comes up and a scheduled activity can’t happen at the planned time, our guide will do their best to rearrange or adjust it. We want you to have an amazing time—but we also make the final calls, and it’s important that all participants respect these decisions.

To join the trip, good physical health is required. Serious cardiovascular issues or neurological/mental health disorders may be exclusion criteria. If you’re unsure about your condition, it’s essential to check with your doctor beforehand.

Would you like to take professional photos too?

Our guides will help you find the perfect angle, the best composition, and make the most out of the available light.

We work with every participant individually and stay flexible to adapt to the conditions around us.

If the weather or lighting isn’t quite right, we’ll come back to the same spot—because we want you to capture your subject in the best possible conditions.

One thing’s for sure: thanks to your camera’s memory (and your own), the memories of this trip will stay with you forever.

Accommodation

The first and last night will be spent at a hotel near Harstad/Narvik Airport in double rooms. The rooms have bathroom, LCD TV, free Wifi. Breakfast and dinner at the hotel’s restaurant.

We spend 5 nights in two completely renovated, cozy Norwegian houses (1 house for 4 people) right on the beach. Each house has 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen and a living room. The area is beautiful, and the northern lights can literally be photographed from the window. The breakfasts and dinners will be served in a nearby restaurant.

Tour guide

I hiked, climbed mountains, and then I wanted to bring home what I saw in the mountains, so photography came into my life as a hobby, and after ten years as a profession. I’ve shared my experiences and what I’ve seen with the public in several exhibitions and travelogues. Since I decided to get the FIAP (Fédération Internationale de I’Art Photographique), I have been awarded special prizes, distinctions and acceptances in international competitions. I want to show our travellers the exciting and varied world of landscape photography.

I started my photography journey with bird photography, achieving great results in both national and international competitions. Over time, my interest shifted towards landscape photography, and soon, I also delved into the fascinating world of drone photography. My work has been successfully recognized in prestigious competitions such as National Geographic, Nature Photographer of the Year, Magical Hungary, PCCS International Salon, Sony, vadon.ro, IBP Dreamscapes International Salon, MAFOSZ, FIAP, Pannonia Reflections, BPOTY, and WildLifePhoto. My photographs are featured in permanent exhibitions, and I have also published several self-published books showcasing my work.

Tour guide

Photography is not just a hobby for me – it is a passion inspired by my love of nature. I am fascinated by the beauty of the landscape and the uniqueness of the built environment. Photographic tours allow us to get closer to the wonders of nature, to discover the beauty that surrounds us and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world. Besides landscape photography, interior and street photography have a special place in my life. In 2023, I tried to deepen my knowledge in this field by taking a course in Street Photography at MOME. My pictures try to capture the special atmosphere of each location, the magic of the moment and the diversity of the world.
